Thumbs up The "Becoming cultured thread".

The Culture is one of those things that if it doesn't exist , then it should be created ( in some other realm than the imagination).

It happens the Culture is not only about AIs, drones , spaceships and a post-scarcity era , but about a group of people who decided to be more peacefull and selfless.

Hence this thread is to post about any projects or sites which have a "Cultured" touch.
The kind of projects that a Culture citizen would look and think : hey, that's cool , we had something like that during the Culture's inception.

Please add any "Cultured" projects you know of. Who knows maybe in a soon future we can become like them even if we haven't reached the "post-scarcity" stage.

Default First Cultured Project : The Grameen Bank

    The Grameen Bank.

Founded by Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunnus, it is a bank foucused in giving loans to the rural poor. In 2007 the bank had more than 7 million borrowers.

The bank has been critisized for not being able to operate without subsides, hence being somekind of welfare. Nontheless, I think the idea is good.

Criticism notwithstanding, Bangladesh's gini seems to be stable and the per capita GDP seems to be climbing steadily. To what degree the Grameen bank has contributed to this situation , I can not tell.

Lightbulb Second Cultured Project : Wikipedia.

With 23 million articles it is one of the largest knowledge collection in the world.
An amazing example of what can be done when people work together with a common goal ( 100,000 contributors ).

Thumbs up Third Cultured Project : Khan's Academy

Salman Khan decided to start an educational revolution. So he set up a website with free educational material.
He currently has more than 3600 free 10 minutes lessons availale ( some 600 hours ) . The site has been given a grant by Bill Gates, which somhow redeems him from being a monopolistic bully.
Ain't he a cool (and cultured) guy ?

I can hardly think of anything more Cultured than free education for everyone everywhere at any time , language limitations nonwithstanding .

Lightbulb Fourth Cultured Proyect : Economic and Political Simulators.

In the Culture a set of benevolent Minds run the economy and politics.

We Earth dwellers have to do with unseeming political parties and corrupt authorities whose main expertise area is self beneffit ( first world citizens, please do not get offended by these words, I am sure you share this disgrace to a lesser degree ).

Anyway , untill we have some working Mind ( which may or may not happen ).
We'll have to make use of the available tools :

Economical and political simulators. These heterogenous simulations and games give us some insight on actual problems and on a way of solving them.

Although a full fledged economical simulation will not happen in the near future, there are some interesting sims which I will be updating as I find them. ( so this post will be a perpetual work in progress ).

Note a full fledged economic sim would have to include , government, consumers , companies , and ecology ( to a degree ). This would be a very complex sim and would take several gigabytes of information.

A macroeconomic simulator - The interface is dry and not really enticing but its main purpose is not entertainment , but education, so I guess it is acceptable.

    DEMOCRACY

I have to admit I have not played this game . As per the faq it seems a good political sim.

Lightbulb Fifth Cultured Project : Open Robotic Platforms

Within the Culture most of the job ( a 99.9% guesstimate ) is done by drones .

So , we need open robotic platforms for R&D purposes.

Of course robots can't be free ( there are manufacturing costs ) , but open platforms are a sound option for incremental development.

Thumbs up Sixth Cultured project : Brain Control ( muahahaha ).

    Or more likely brain self-control.

We are giving ours first shy steps towards harnessing the power of our own brain.

There is a project that uses transcranial electrical stimulation to coax the brain into producing opioids :

I hope the above project works and takes out of business those rather violent entrepreneurs which have sprouted like fungi in a wet season in my country, causing mayem, destruction and "failed state" zones.

And another (much more invasive ) project to treat depresion :

Lightbulb Seventh Cultured Proyect : Health Care robots

In the Culture people don't really age and there is a significant lack of diseases.
I guess most injuries are caused by accidents.

While we get to that point, technology is heading towards a future in which robots will help us be healthier.

I doubt we'll ever get that far.

Edit: And there's not a thing you or I can do to influence such a course of events.
