Not sure about "He'll fiercely research a complex topic... and then find an excuse to splice it into the plot superfluously, as if he just wants to show off", I though Iain was quite well known for doing zero research?

Fair enough, I'll hold my hands up, I didn't post it in the review section - maybe I should have, oh well. As it was my own musing I though it better in the non"M" bit

Glib retread of The Crow Road.
I went from being engaged to indifferent to infuriated. The last few chapters seemed to have beamed in from the planet Zarg by a different writer. I was almost expecting to see "will this do?" written on the endpaper.
Glad it was a library loan. Maybe it's time for TMH to shelve the wishywash of non-M?
