Religion - I was a recalcitrant atheist during my early days , but I have softened my viewpoint as I have aged and become a little bit wiser ( now I am agnostic ).
My favorite Iain M Banks book is Use of Weapons, but the one that got me hooked-up with the culture is "Player of Games" , because it draws a detailed picture of life within the Culture.
