I got an Xbox 360 for xmas and there are a couple of great games I'm playing; Fight night 3, Gears of war and farcry2.
I also got Jodie Mario Kart for her Wii which, to be honest, is a pile of crap.

I also spend waaaaay too much time on WoW.

Wish I could get hold of a Wii Fit. I refuse to pay more than RRP so I might be in for a long wait.
Loved Mario Kart personally. Got bored after I'd golded everything though. Going for all the stars is a bigger time investment that I can manage. Enjoying Metroid Prime Corruption at the moment and still trying to finish Super Mario Galaxy.

Ah! I'm playing Lego Star Wars for the third or fourth time at the moment.
It truely is a brilliant game.
Believe me guys the Wii soon loses its novelty value. The Wii fit was great for 2 weeks until you get bored and now the unit sits gathering dust.
On the Xbox I'm playing virtua tennis 3 and Flatout. I got Bioshock but it's rubbish.

I have to disagree with Jag.
I have an xbox for the 'core gamer' games that don't get released on the wii, but if anything is released on both systems I get it on the wii, it may not be as pretty, but it's a hell of a lot more fun to play.
It's not that I don't like the Wii, it's great for family etc, but for playing games like FPS and driving games it does get a bit tiring pointing at the screen all the time.
And now with my dodgy right shoulder I don't think I'll be playing Mario and Sonic at the olympics anymore;).
I enjoy playing console games and have all systems and I'm sure I'll be on the Wii when the next Metroid comes out.

I'll be fine, just put a tartan rug over my legs.
You know, it does my head in.....you pay £35 or more for a game like Call of Duty, Gears of war etc that have amazing, 'this is the best game ever', write ups in the fanboy magazines only to find that they are a real dissappointment full of glitches and general shite gameplay, and, better stuff can be found on miniclips.
And another thing....games like Fallout 3, Bioshock, Farcry 2, demand at least 40 hours gameplay:eek:.
Give me Asteroids, Bombjack and Galaxian anytime.

What?? Where's the depth of gameplay in Asteroids and Galaxians? You've basically got three buttons and you just clear sheet after sheet and nothing changes. It just gets faster/busier until you die. You're looking at it through a fog of nostalgia, man. There's a reason no-one plays those games today.
There is far too much attention paid to graphics today - I'll give you that - but gameplay has come a long way.

I got a lend of the PC version of CoD4 and played the whole thing through over a weekend, so quite short. Not sure about playing it on a console though, I'm not much good at FPS games and need the mouse. The CoD games are very good though, even novices can complete them on the easy difficulty.

Well, OK...Not 'no-one', but only die-hard ex-arcade dwellers. I mean I used to think the Star Wars arcade game (the one with the vector graphics) was the pinnacle of gaming but it's to basic and so repetitive that it just look silly compared to todays games. (For the record, I had an Amiga and loved it).
I think there's a lot of rubbish about but the top games of today are much better in terms of gameplay than the top games of ten years ago, certainly twenty years ago. Portal is one good example, Civilisation, Super Mario Galaxy and the Zelda games, New Super Mario Bros etc. I'm sure there's great gameplay on the 360 and PS3 too but I haven't got my hands on either of those.
And I just managed to order a Wii Fit for RRP. Woohoo! Forget the graphics, those balance games are just great.

There have always been good games and bad, even back in the olden days.
You can still play those old games if that's what you want.
Me, I like good games that use the tech of the day to it's best advantage, games like the Halflife series, COD's, Fallout 3, Bioshock, GRID and so on.
Crysis was a bad game, both in terms of graphics, it was so poorly optimised that even a 10 grand rig couldn't run it with all it's bells and whistles turned up to the max, and in terms of gameplay, it just wasn't very good.

I'm not saying that there's not rubbish about now. It's just that I can't get misty-eyed about 'vintage' games with hundreds of levels, all indistinguishable from the first and gameplay design that was obviously and cripplingly restricted by the hardware on which they were running. I think some of what those programmers achieved with limited resources was just amazing but I still don't think I'd want to play those games now.

I just watched a film called A Fistful Of Quarters: The King Of Kong about the obsessive quest to get the highest score at Donkey Kong and to get to the legendary 'Kill Screen'. Now, it's not a very good game at the best of times and the two guys featured in the film out in a lot of time trying to get that perfect game, but will anybody be doing the same for Crysis / Bioshock / Halflife?
I doubt it as the move from 'scores' to an 'experience' in games has killed much of the replayability, which may or may not be a good thing. Once a games is done, it's done - I played Mass Effect through a few times, doing all the quests and playing as good / bad characters but that's it, now. However, I still play a bunch of games just to see if I can get further, some of them using ASCII characters as the cutting edge of graphics.
The game, to me, is more than graphics or a semi-linear 'storyline' but in the game itself. It might just be me being old and boring, as well as being an old wargamer / RPG'er where imagination was mandatory.

I don't get the gripes, if you don't like action games don't play em, if you want to play puzzlers, rpg's, rts's and so on there are tons of them.
Same goes for old games, they are all still around, if you want.
What's to complain about?

I'm a PC gamer at heart, and I sincerely believe some games require the PC's keyboard and mouse to be played properly. First Person Shooters are fine on consoles, but on a PC the speed and accuracy of the controls are MUCH better. There's a good reason PC and console FPS multiplayer are kept strictly separated. One experiment Microsoft did with halo 2, allowing PC gamers to join Xbox live games, was quickly aborted when it became apparent that the average PC Halo player could beat the best Xbox player nearly effortlessly.
Strategy games and complex MMO's also require more input options than a console controller can provide. Perhaps consoles need to invest more in controller-alternatives. Not only will this endear more PC gamers, it also opens up gaming genres previously left mostly unexplored by consoles.
I also own an Xbox 360, but I got it primarily to play Fable 2 and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.

I agree with you about strategy games and such.
Having played Metroid Prime: Corruption on the Wii though I think that the Wiimote (for aim) and the nunchuk (for movement) combo makes for the best control scheme on a console FPS yet. It's nearly (not quite, but nearly) as good as mouse/keys. Had Halo on the Xbox mk1 and never had much love for the controls.

I'm guessing you've seen some of the brouhaha regarding Killzone 2 on the PS3? Well I started playing last night and, as far as I'm concerned (and I'm a gamer from teh ZX Spectrum days), it really does rock. The graphics are unlike anything I've seen before and look amazing on a large HD screen. It definitely owes a bit to Aliens and Starship Troopers but that's not really a bad thing.
The gameplay is excellent and feeling of the organised chaos of war is very well choreographed. So far I've made a little headway in the 1 player campaign and I've played a couple of bot populated multiplayer games but the multiplayer levels are huuuuge!
For me, I love games that immerse you fully in a world to such a degree that after playing it you actually feel as though you've physically been there. Half-Life, Deus Ex, Max Payne are some examples.
Just out of interest has anyone played Eve Online? That sounds quite interesting (especially if you played Elite back in the day ;)

It's been a long long time since I ever read a games mag.
It is annoying, the perception of gamers being a group of socially inept loners.
That's true sci-fi & fantasy fans, et al, as well.
I was always very popular at school, but felt I had to keep my geeky side hidden in order to be so.
It wasn't until uni that even a modicum of geekines was permissible.
However, speaking as one who spans many different sub cultures, the console loyalty wars, sega v nintendo, gamecube v ps2, ps3 v xbox, young males declaring their loyalty to a profit making organisation and decrying all others who would choose to spend their money on the competitor, to an almost religious intensity, really didn't help.
