After trying to get enthusiastic about the Commonwealth saga by Peter F. Hamilton I can take no more. There are better books to occupy my time with and so with that it's on to better authors.

I just got to the point where I couldn't care less about these characters. After visiting http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judas_Unchained I have satisfied my curiosity as to what happened. Beware spoilers in that link.

I think I came away lucky not to continue reading this over long tripe.

Oooh, I like this idea.
A books I've given up upon thread.

I started reading Kevin J Anderson's Hidden Empire.
The first book in what seems a long and popular series.

I couldn't make it past the 3rd chapter.
It was just rubbish, rubbish writing. Utter drivel, and has put me off from ever reading anything of his again.

Your loss.

Maybe, but it's a loss I can live with.

Yeah- never read them but they are apparently terrible.

The dullest book I can think of is Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke. Thankfully I was listening on audio book. I think if I'd been actually reading it I'd have given up.

I loved that!
And I suspect I loved it for the very reasons you (probably)didn't- the fact it took an age for anything to happen and most of it was just unlikeable people sitting around talking to each other...

I loved it too. Thinking of re-reading it actually! :)

I've given up on quite a few books in recent years and can finally do it without feeling guilty. In junior school - yes, I can just about remember it - we had it drummed into us we should always finish a book. It's only taken 30 years to shake the feeling I'm doing something wrong!

Ohhh guys guys, nothing happens in it.

rac you sum it up nicely:

the fact it took an age for anything to happen and most of it was just unlikeable people sitting around talking to each other...
Except you forgot to add when something finally did happen it was pretty inconsequential anyway:(
