Having many recommendations thrown my way, I have to ask what is Piers Anthony like? You never seem him referred to much. Is it trashy, worth ago?

Piers Anthony has written millions of books http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_works_by_Piers_Anthony But you're right he not much talked about & you don't see that many of his books in shops.

He's done mainly Fantasy, but some SF too

I think some of his books may be a bit dodgy

but I really enjoyed On a Pale Horse and have several more of his books on my shelves

He's one of those authors that just never knows when to stop. Find the Ox, Orn, Omnivore trilogy if you can, those are excellent science fiction. He loves a pun, and a play on words (Up Schist Crick is a short story that sticks in my mind) and the Xanth (geddit) series were amusing to begin with, see A Spell for Chameleon, etc. but went on too long. The On a Pale Horse series were not bad, they explore the various incarnations of death, time etc. There's a 5 part series set in space, Mercenary, Statesman etc or something like that; lots of action but I never really understood the character motivations. His oldest work is probably his best.
