I have this books sitting in front of me, I will read it after Dune by Frank Herbert. However, what's the gist of the story with out spoiling it. Is it SF or Fantasy? Not that I'm worried either way. From the stuff on the back of the book, my guess is some kind of cyberpunk. Is this close?

I also have Perdido Street Station on my shelf, but it is currently unread. I believe it is more Fantasy than SF. But not traditional Fantasy, kinda Cyberpunk with Victorian stuff & he's also often termed as being "new weird", what ever that's supposed to mean

Edit to add this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Weird
So now we know

I have bounced off this book a number of times. Deep's right about it, a kinda Steampunky crossover with a bit of Gothic Horror.

Of course, it could all change after the bit I read... :)

It seems to be a meeting of genres, a bit of medieval, some magic, some fantasy, some science, a bit of everything. I think that's why I hated it, it was neither one thing or the other.

I happened to love this book, and most of the rest of Mevillie's stuff too. Take one steampunk world with lots of different races, add some politics and some romance, shake it up with some great lyrical writing and that's what you'll get.
Plot-wise, Our Hero is asked to recreate a set of wings for a being who has lost his. Why this ends up being a more complicated request than it at first seems is most of the story. China is a great stylist-if you like short, sharp punchy writing this will drive you bonkers. But you're a Banks fan, so you should be fine.
